By now everyone has seen footage of the fiasco in Detroit. Professional small forward hack Ron Artest came down intentionally hard on Pistons big man Ben Wallace, prompting Wallace to push Artest in the face. Artest decided to make a drama out of the situation and laid down on the scorers table to emphasize how much of a victim he was in the situation.
He was then hit by a beer thrown by someone in the crowd. Wrong move by the idiot in the crowd, no doubt. But then Artest jumped into the crowd! You can't do that! No matter what the fans do, players can not jump into the crowd and attack fans. These players are machines - athletes with 4% body fat - against stumpy Pistons fans with 60% body fat. No contest.
I mention all this though, because I've been sickened by how it has been covered in the media and how much of a pass the players themselves have gotten. All of the focus has been on the "problems with our society" and the "out of control fans." Well what about the idea that Ron Artest is just a goon? Has anyone thought of that?
Yesterday CNN had a poll asking viewers if they agreed with the suspensions. What kind of question is that? Presumably everyone who says "yes" thinks Artest got exactly what he deserved with a year long suspension, while everyone who answered "no" was presumed to have thought it was too harsh.
Well I have a new catagory: It was a slap on the wrist. Only the remainder of the season? Artest attacked - assaulted - a fan. So did Jermaine O'Neal. So did Stephen Jackson. In my view, Artest and O'Neal should be banned from the league... indefinately. That kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. I'm sick of professional athletes making excuses about being "disrespected" by fans in this instance. That's not what its about.
Artest should be an example of what the NBA does not stand for, not what it puts up with. Latrell Sprewell must be wondering what a guy has to do to get kicked out of the league. Sprewell tried to choke his own coach. He attacked someone in the league, and not nearly as harshly as what we saw the other night in Detroit from Artest and O'Neal. Seriously, what would it take for a player to get kicked out of the NBA? That's a frightening thought.
All I've heard from commentators and former players is how to keep the players safe from the fans and how to maintain security between the players and fans. Hmm. Maybe get rid of the players who don't respect the game enough not to destroy it through a stupid act like this.
Artest is a goon and shouldn't be allowed to represent the NBA. I don't care how good he or the others are, this is the sort of thing the NBA needs to come down harshly on. Artest should be gone for good from the league and O'Neal should be about an inch from the same.
And, both should be arrested for assault. There is no excuse for them not to be. There was no self-defense. Beer won't hurt you. The fist of a professional athlete will. Just because they are on the court of a professional sporting event does not make them exempt from the law. C'mon Detroit police. I want to see some charges.
No more pretending like this was all the fault of the fans. That's just stupid and gives players an excuse to be irresponsible. Artest gave a blackeye to the league on friday - not to mention the one he gave to several fans in Detroit.
